Reflecting… wait what
One of the funniest moments reflecting on the Summer of ‘22 actually occurred once I was back in school. A couple days ago, actually.
Some of my teachers were asking me about what I did the last few months. I filled them in on the internship, the class, the club (and even this blog). At the end, one of my my teachers asked me how I thought it went. Not thinking, I started with my automated answer of “good,” but then stopped myself.
I ended up telling them that I actually may have discovered that marketing is not exactly what I want to do for a living. That I think it’s an incredible industry that is so valuable to know and learn about (for EVERYONE). That I’m glad I did the internship either way. To my surprise, my teachers looked at me and said that’s great. They told me it was good that I knew what I didn’t want to do. That’s how most people start out, that’s how they started out. It’s about discovery and experience, and that made me feel a lot better in the end.
That being said, Mar/Comms is ever-changing. It’s not routine - It’s being prepared for the growing trends of the world and knowing how to adapt. Communications is becoming necessary in the ways that technology takes over our lives. For people my age, networking is so important!! Especially in college. The more people who can put in a good word for you, the better. How will you network and know how to speak and interview successfully if those communication skills aren’t fully developed? I hope Gavel Club will make students better listeners and contributors as I saw how important that is with rejection, writing strategy, referrals, LinkedIn, sales, and more in life and beyond.
